ANOMALY RECORD DATA:
People think I leave teddy bears around my camps because I’m soft.
Truth is, they’re anomaly bait.
I found that old couch sitting on a rusted railcar near Rustwater Crossing. Someone had made themselves a little home—a stove, a candle, stacked crates. On the couch sat two teddy bears with a garden gnome sprawled beside them like he’d passed out after an all-night Nukashine binge. Between the bears rested a little knife.
That was enough for me to know the place wasn’t abandoned.
I tipped my pig mask and said, “Evenin’.”
The bears waved.
The gnome didn’t.
Around midnight I woke to the sound of tiny feet pattering across sheet metal. The pink bear was gone. The panda was gone.
The gnome was sitting upright.
His painted grin hadn’t changed, but somehow he looked… pleased.
Then the bears burst from the shadows.
One came flying off the stove, the other launched from the roof of the railcar, both making those little stuffed squeaks that somehow sound meaner than a Deathclaw roar when it’s three in the morning. They hit me high while the gnome quietly pointed toward every place I tried to escape, like he was directing traffic.
I finally grabbed the little rascal by his pointy hat and yelled, “Call off your fuzzballs!”
The gnome never spoke.
He just tipped over onto his side.
The bears froze.
They looked at him.
Looked at me.
Then silently marched back to the couch, climbed into their seats, and folded their little paws as if nothing had happened.
By sunrise, the camp looked exactly as I’d found it.
Two teddy bears.
One garden gnome taking another nap.
A little knife between them.
I’ve walked Appalachia a long time, and I’ve learned one thing: if you ever find teddy bears sitting quietly with a garden gnome, don’t assume the gnome’s the harmless one.
He’s the boss.
