That's the lesson. Short one. Ugly one. Important one.
AB-RX. FI. REC. INV. All those little chunks up front? They mean something. They tell you what kind of drawer you're touching and how many fingers you might get back.
Keep the prefix.
Keep the dashes.
Keep the full code.
Don't be that guy who sees AB-RX-BSB-003 and goes, "eh, three." That guy gets eaten by a filing cabinet.
Some numbers are labels. Some are handles. Some are footprints. Some are teeth wearing a nametag.
FI numbers are people, sort of. Traveler-facing people. Public enough to credit, private enough not to hand some raider with a clipboard your whole life story.
Record codes are different. They can tie a broadcast to a case, a case to evidence, evidence to a place, place to a bad idea somebody already tried twice.
And then there are codes that don't sit still.
You see one repeat in a story, then on a record, then in a note somebody pretends is just flavor? Keep it.
Corporate calls that paranoia.
I call it not stepping on the same land mine three times because the paint was pretty.
